Boma's view about Bolivia

Bolivia has a variety of landscapes. There are the highlands with mountains of more than 6000m high, the tropical forests in the north, the marshlands in the east, the bush in the south, as well as the exceptional scenery in the west, that of the salt lake of Uyuni.

For someone who wants to see nature they will be amazed in this country. For hikers there is the Amboro National Park, the Noel Kempff National Park, the Lake Titicaca or the Yungas that all present marvellous scenery. The advantage is that the foothpaths are not overrun as in other countries such as Peru. For those that like places of cultural interest there are many locations to visit, for example the Inca ruins at Titicaca or the dinosaur tracks at Sucre.

Also many of cities are being developed and have a modern feel, they are really worth seeing. They include La Paz at a height of 3800m, or Cochabamba that all year round has a pleasant climate, or Sucre a city in old colonial style. Additionally there is the wine city of Tarija or the busy, modern city of Santa Cruz.

The people here, especially in lowlands, are friendly and their motto is “tranquilo no mas“, which means to be always calm. They don't get easily upset and everything moves calmly. European tourists often experience that people here don`t work with the principle “The customer is the king“, instead it depends on if they feel like to do something or not. In Bolivia exist also some German Mennonite colonies, as well as Japanese and russian colonies. Besides Spanish as main language the indio people around La Paz speak aimara and those in Cochabamba and Sucre speak Quetschua, and the Mennonites in the colonies speak low German.

This big country is sparsely populated, especially in the east. And it contains only a few good roads that makes travelling time-consuming. Most people use buses to travel for low prices and the cities have cheap buses and taxis as well. Some restaurants offer good and cheap dishes, but tourists have to pay attention that the restaurants work cleanly to avoid problems with the stomach.
